Glamour and Sinchronicity
Glamour is originally said to be a spell cast by a witch to make somebody or something more attractive, causing an alluring, fascinating magnetism. It is even said that for glamour to function properly the illusion must be a precise proportion of the transparent and apparent-- opaque enough to ignite wonderment and mystery yet translucent enough for us to see a bit of ourselves, or what we hope to be. In line with these ideas, glamour in this body of work, is the catalyst in the search for beauty in whatever form. These paintings are some of my most recent glamours. The glamour in these paintings is not the deceiving clouds of Hollywood we all think of when we hear the word, but rather, the derivative for beauty, and more importantly--synchronicity.
Synchronicity was originally coined by psychologist CG Jung. Synchronicities are these experiences where, even if for a fleeting moment, the huge interconnected ecosystem of existence in the universe congeal into something palpable and conceivable. The result is often a feeling that we have a more than trivial connection to the world around us. Synchronicity explains those times when glamour leads to simultaneous, complimentary vibrations-- times when we can feel ourselves resonating with the universe.
The paintings in Glamour and Synchronicity are all done with acrylic paint on newspaper. I have always thought newspaper is beautiful— there is little in life more glamorous than a newspaper and a coffee in the morning light of a neighborhood café. Newspaper is so much a part of our reality, documenting all the things we are supposed to care about and all the things happening to everyone everywhere. Newspapers even have a synchronous nature in that, no matter where in the world you are, you will find people reading newspapers. Additionally, sometimes there is a story so internationally important, you could find people reading the very same story from San Diego to Singapore. The newspaper then, represents the interconnected ecosystem we are all a part of. My pieces are painted over the newspaper, over everything happening around us in the world that in some ways connect us. The paintings show my most recent glamorous and synchronous moments. Purposefully, however the newspaper headlines and messages can sometimes, as in life, be seen bleeding through the paint or through our individual experiences. I collected the newspapers to create this body of work specifically to paint over articles written by friends, auspicious days or important headlines. Behind each painting, which shows a personal glamorous synchronicity, lies the newspaper, symbolizing that interconnected web where we all have an individual place and the possibility to synchronize.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
The fleeting nature of life’s occasions and the human aesthetic of capturing a memory have been the inspiration for all my paintings. Each piece is my vain attempt to briefly capture, as we all try in some way to do, the imprints behind the shutters of my mind’s eye. I am seeking to record the relativity of experience-- the data held in our brains where flashes of color, wind, sound, smell and all the faces of life come together to form the nostalgic feelings that unify us as humans. Such feelings begin like the headlines of a newspaper—bold and indelible, firm with meaning. Over time, however, like the newspaper media these pieces are painted on, our feelings and memories slowly fade and modulate with our ever-changing perspectives.
The pieces themselves, all painted on newspapers from around the world, will someday, like our fleeting memories, slowly decompose to where they began. And although the material nature of newspaper is to decompose, its role in the cultural tapestry of the world will never lose its integral function or style. In addition, as media for art, the newspaper represents our place in culture and its place in us. Life happens over the most important headlines, but as we reflect it becomes obvious that the news of culture bleeds through into our lives influencing and changing us forever. In the end, however, it is the seemingly insignificant flashes of memory that we will cherish: the smell of a lover, the color of the mountains, the wind through open car windows. Time fades the significance of headlines, news and pop culture. Memories fade. These pieces are my contribution as a tangible attempt to freeze time for a brief moment, until it becomes “old news.”
